Willard Carroll Smith II, popularly known as Will Smith, is an American actor, rapper, and producer. Asides from being one of Hollywood’s biggest movie stars, he’s known for his role as the Fresh Prince in the 90s sitcom Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.

Will was born on September 25, 1968 (age 54), to parents Caroline (Bright), a school board administrator, and Willard Smith, a refrigeration engineer and a US Air Force army veteran.

He was raised in West Philadelphia in the Wynnefield neighborhood and was the first of the couple’s three children, although he has two older half-sisters from both parents, Pamela. He attended a private catholic elementary school, Our Lady of Lourdes, and Overbrook High School.

His brief musical career as a rapper was born when he began rapping at age 12.

Throughout high school, he frequently wrote rap songs and engaged in rap battles in the neighborhood.

At age 13, his parents separated, but it wasn’t until 2000 that they divorced.

Their album Rock The House followed after, and in 1989, they won the first Grammy award for the rap category for Parents Don’t Just Understand and another Grammy for Summertime, released in 1991.

The film was hugely successful, being the third highest-grossing movie of the year and receiving critical acclaim.

1997 also saw Smith launch his solo music career. He released Men in Black, a theme song for the movie released earlier, and the song won him a Grammy for the Best Rap Solo Performance in 1998.

He also released his debut solo album Big Willie Style, which charted top ten on Billboard 200, and the album contained the hit single Getting Jiggy With It, which ranked #1 on Billboard Hot 100.

In 1998, he starred in Enemy of the State and the following year, in Wild, Wild West, turning down the role of Neo in Matrix. The year saw him release his second studio album, Willenium, with a Wild, Wild West theme song as the lead single. The album was a success. He also featured in Boy You Knock Me Out, a hit single by co-star Tatyana Ali.

In 2001, Smith starred in Ali, where he portrayed heavyweight boxer Mohammed Ali, earning him an Academy Award. The following year, he released his third album, Born to Reign.

In 2003, Smith starred in Bad Boys II, which success at the Box Office despite poor public reception. The following year, he starred in I, Robot, and Shark Tale’s animated movie.

In 2006, his performance in The Pursuit of Happyness earned him an Oscar for Best Actor. The following year, he played the role of a scientist in I am Legend.

His first superhero role came in 2008 when he starred in Hancock. That same year, he starred in Seven Pounds. Four years later, his next significant role came in Men in Black III, the franchise’s highest-grossing movie.

In 2013, Smith starred alongside his son Jaden Smith in After Earth. The film turned out to be a flop at the Box Office with much public criticism. Smith referred to it as the ‘most painful failure’ in his career and subsequently took a break from acting for a year and a half.

In 2016, he starred as Deadshot in DC’s Suicide Squad, and later that year, he starred in Collateral Beauty, which received much public criticism and made the lowest opening of his career. His next movie Bright also saw much public criticism.

His next significant role was as the Genie in Aladdin. The movie was a huge Box Office success and Smith’s highest-grossing film. In 2019, he starred in Gemini Man, a Box Office failure and heavily criticized by the public.

In 2020, he and Martin Lawrence teamed up for Bad Boys for Life, the third movie in the franchise. In 2021, he released his memoir Will, which he wrote with the help of author Mark Manson.

Later that year, he starred in King Richard, a film based on the life of Venus and Serena Williams, where Smith played the role of their father, Richard Williams. He won three Academy Awards for his performance in the movie.

Jada Pinkett Smith, formerly Jada Koren Pinkett, is an American actress, talk show host, and businesswoman. She and Will married on December 31, 1997, three years after they’d initially met on the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air set. The two have gone on to have an unconventional marriage.
