Robyn Rihanna Fenty, popularly known as Rihanna, is a singer, songwriter, actress, and businesswoman. Since 2005 when she came into the limelight, she has become the second best-selling female music artist of all time, a successful businesswoman, and in more recent years, one of the youngest self-made billionaires in America.
Rihanna Age Early Life
Rihanna was born on February 20, 1988, in Saint Michael, Barbados, to parents Monica Braithwaite and Ronald Fenty. Her mother was an accountant, while her father was a warehouse supervisor who also sold clothes in the market stall.
Growing up in a 3-bedroom bungalow in Bridgetown, Barbados, she helped her father to sell clothes in the market stall.
Her childhood home was marked by domestic abuse as her father, Ronald, was an alcoholic and cocaine addict and would frequently beat up her mother. This culminated in frequent migraines from as early as eight years that only ceased after her parent’s divorce when she was 14.
She attended Charles F. Broome Memorial Primary School and later Combermere School for her high school education which she eventually abandoned in pursuit of a music career. However, she would subsequently finish school with the help of a tutor.
Despite her home situation, the pressure she endured helped her to develop a thick skin that would help her during her school years, acting as a shield against the hate directed at her for being too light-skinned.
Rihanna’s love for reggae music while growing up eventually shaped her music style after she became a global star.
Rihanna Music Career
Her music career began when she was discovered by an American producer, Evan Rogers. She and two other classmates had formed a girl group during their early teens, and they managed to land an audition with the record producer while he was vacationing with his wife on the island.
Impressed by how she carried herself and her talent, Rogers invited her for a solo performance where she performed Destiny Childs Emotion and Mariah Carey’s Hero, which earned her a second invitation to the producer’s hometown to record demo tapes.
Roger eventually sent out the demo tapes to the record label Def Jam where Jay-Z had newly become President and CEO. Despite his initial skepticism, the rapper finally invited her for an audition for the label.
Her performance of Whitney Houston’s cover of ‘For The Love of You as well as the songs on the demo tapes during the audition, got her signed under the Def Jam label.
After signing her six-album record deal with Def Jam, Rihanna moved from her hometown in Barbados to stay with Rogers and his family in the United States.
She started working on her debut album with her record label, and the lead single, Pon De Replay, was released and received well.
Her Debut album, Music of the Sun, was released in 2005, and it sold 2 million copies worldwide and debuted among the top 10 albums on the billboard 200.
A Girl Like Me, her sophomore album, was released in 2006 after she began work on it a month after the debut album dropped. It performed even better than the first, landing in the top 10 on the charts of 13 different countries, and the lead single, SOS, became her first No. 1 on the Billboard hot 100.
For her third studio album, Good Girl Gone Bad, Rihanna experimented with a different sound with the help of Timbaland, Sean Garrett, and Tricky Stewart.
The album had many hit singles like Umbrella, Hate that I love you, Shut up and drive, and Don’t stop the music. Umbrella was an international success and was named one of the best-selling singles in the world, and she earned her first Grammy.
Rihanna released her fourth studio album, Rated R, in November 2009, and the album featured the hit single Rude Boy, which did well on the charts.

Rihanna won her third Grammy in 2012 for All of the Lights with Kanye, and her seventh studio album, Unapologetic, was released and had hit singles like Diamonds on it.
It was her first No.1 album on the billboard 200 charts. Riri went on a Diamond World tour that same year to promote the album.
In 2013, Rihanna won a Grammy for We Found Love and featured on songs with Wale and Monster with Eminem. She also featured on Shakira’s Can’t Remember to Forget You in 2014, and that same year she moved from Def Jam and signed solely with Roc Nation.
As she put plans in place to release her eighth album, Anti, she released singles Bitch Better Have My Money, American Oxygen, and FourFiveSeconds with Kanye.
She collaborated with Samsung for her eighth album to promote their Samsung Galaxy line in exchange for sponsorship of the album and the following tour. Anti was released exclusively on Tidal. However, the album leaked before the release date and still charted at No.1 on the Billboard 200.
2016 was Rihanna’s year of features. She paired up with Calvin Harris for the Single; This is What You Came For, Drake’s Too Good, Kanye’s Famous, and Mike Will Made It’s Nothing is Promised.
